I was so totally not aware that people didn’t know that being sorted into Houses was a real thing in UK schools. It’s not something made up just for the Harry Potter world, it’s a real schooling system, I was in the St George House at my school and everyone had the same attitude to Prefects as everyone in the HP world did to Percy Weasley I can assure you.

Schools in America play sports against other schools if you’re talking serious matches. Like how colleges do? That’s what public schools do too. I have a vague recollection from preschool soccer that between the actual GAMES against other preschools, we did…scrimmage matches? I think? Where they split us up and we played against each other. And that’s what they did in my PE classes, too, but I told my teachers I was morally opposed to team sports so I didn’t participate. And when I was in school we didn’t have sports day but we had Field Day where the different classes that were all the same grade competed against each other in like, relay races and egg-spoon races and stuff.

You group kids up into teams for about 2 weeks. Each team gets a color. And they compete against eachorher fiercely for about 2 weeks in various tasks and challenges. Friendships torn apart, sibling pitted against sibling, and inevitebly a descent into uncontrolled chaos.
